On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed sharp criticism at her West Bengal counterpart, Mamata Banerjee, following the alleged gang rape of a medical student. Gupta condemned Banerjee's advice for female students to avoid going out at night, labeling it as disgraceful and indicative of a political low point.
In her statement, Gupta asserted that Banerjee's remarks reflect the 'failed administration' and 'morally bankrupt leadership' of the Trinamool Congress government. She emphasized that instead of ensuring justice for the rape victim, the West Bengal government is shamelessly questioning women's freedoms and rights.
Gupta stated that leaders are expected to guarantee the safety and dignity of women, rather than impose tyrannical restrictions on their freedoms. She accused Banerjee of allowing criminals, protected by those in power in Bengal, to roam freely while brutally silencing the voices of victims seeking justice.
The incident in question involved a second-year medical student from Odisha, who was reportedly gang-raped outside a private medical college in Durgapur on Friday night after going out for dinner with a friend. The 23-year-old student is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Durgapur.
Mamata Banerjee's Response
Following the incident, Banerjee addressed reporters at Kolkata airport, stating, 'She is studying at a private medical college. Who is responsible for this? How did she come out at 12:30 AM? Students residing in hostels, especially those who have come from outside West Bengal, are expected to adhere to hostel rules. They should avoid going out late at night, although they have the fundamental right to go wherever they wish.'
However, she later clarified that her words had been 'deliberately misrepresented and taken out of context.' Facing political backlash for her comments, Banerjee reiterated that her statements were misconstrued. Meanwhile, the victim continues to receive care at a Durgapur hospital, and three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
